MILLINGTON FAMILY AND CUTTHORPE CONNECTIONS
by Bernard Millington

Like many people I have been researching my family tree and am amazed to find my roots come from places that I have never heard of. Until a couple of years ago Cutthorpe was a location I never knew existed, but now it keeps cropping up and is a place I intend to visit soon. It is strange really because I have always loved the Peak district and have spent many happy holidays there and intend to hopefully spend some more. Perhaps now I know why with roots from the edge of the Peaks.

I have also always had a fascination with mining which extends to this date. I wanted to be a Tin miner but like many other mining areas the mines went into decline and I never got the chance though I have spent many many hours underground in old workings near my early family home in Cornwall re-opening the shallower workings of old Tin Copper and Lead mines for mineral collection purposes. Obviously Derbyshire and mining is in the blood.

Below is a summary of my paternal link to Cutthorpe and area. I would love to hear from any person with any information that may progress my tree, particularly in relation to John Millington born c1795 and Ann Swindell born c1790. At he moment I have reached an impasse and can't go back any further without a visit to the local records office.

My links with Cutthorpe start with my 4th Great Grandfather, John Millington who was born at Over Green, a small hamlet just to the west of Cutthorpe. John was born in 1795 and married Ann Swindell born 1790 on the 28th June 1813 believed at Old Brampton but this has yet to be confirmed. Ann Swindell was born at Old Brampton, possibly Cutthorpe.

John and Ann had the following Children:-

George born and died 1814 at Ingmanthorpe a small hamlet bordering Cutthorpe
Hannah ( My 3rd Great grandmother) born c1815 at Great Barlow
Henry born c1816 at Great Barlow
Sarah born c1821 at Great Barlow
John born c1823 at Great Barlow
Mary born c1829 at Great Barlow a village just over half a mile away to the North of Cutthorpe

John, born 1795, in 1815 appeared at Wirksworth Quarter sessions for an assault against a Butcher called William Barber of Eckington but at the court all disputes were settled. At this time John's occupation was a farmer.

Hannah, born 1815, gave birth to my 2nd Great Grandfather, Alfred, at Great Barlow out of Wedlock. Shortly after she married George Stevenson born c1818 at Barlow. (Probably my 2rd Great Grandfather but no father appears on the birth certificate). George was a shoe maker and had died before 1844 when Hannah had remarried a Joseph Marsh born c1824 at Wellow, Nottinghamshire. Joseph was a Brick maker. The family moved to Wellow for a short time before returning to Brampton settling at an address known as Wasp Nest.

Hannah and Joseph had the following children:-

Richard born c1844 at Wellow
Sarah born c1846 at Wellow
John born c1848 at Wellow
Charlotte born c1851 at Wellow
Emma born c1858 at Brampton

Richard and John became Brick makers and Coal miners, Sarah and Charlotte became Cotton winders and Emma a dress maker, all with the exception of John remaining to live in the Brampton Parish. John moved to Sheffield.

Henry Millington, born c1816, married a Martha Orwin born c1821 at Chesterfield. They had a Son, George born c1849 at Brimington. John and Martha married at the Church of St Peter and Paul, Old Brampton, on 21st October 1839.

Sarah Millington, born c1821, married a John Holmes born c1809 at Barlow. To date I haven't been able to trace their movements.

John Millington, born c1823, married a Hannah Spiers born c1833 at Upleaden, Gloucestershire.

John and Hannah had the following children:-

Martha born c1856 at Cutthorpe
Sarah born c1858 at Newbold
Henry born c1861 at Cutthorpe
Charles born c1863 at Brampton
John born c1865 at Cutthorpe
Ann born c1868 at Brampton
Samuel Swindell born c1871 at Brampton
Emma born c1877 at Cutthorpe

In the 1861 census they were living at Barber Lane, Brampton. (I believe this to be Barber Lane, Cutthorpe as I can find no record of a Barber Lane in Brampton. At this time John was shown as an Iron Miner - this would fit due to there being an Iron Stone pit at Cutthorpe.

The 1871 census has them living at the same address though now John is a Coal miner.

John died between 1877 and 1881 leaving Hannah to bring up the children.

The 1881 census shows Hannah living at South Terrace, Cutthorpe with her children Charles, now a Coal miner, John, now a Coal miner, Samuel and Emma both School children.

By the 1891 census Hannah had moved from Cutthorpe to live with her son Samuel at Grassmoor and in 1901 census was living at Hasland with her son Charles.

On the 10th October 1880 Martha married a John Sherwin born c1854 at Holmesfield. They married at the church of St Peter and Paul at Old Brampton. They moved out of the parish and eventually ended up in Sheffield. John was a general labourer. Their first child, Emma, was born at Cutthorpe c1881.

Sarah married a Charles Revill born c1845 at Hasland. They married in 1900. Sarah was Charles' second wife, she became step mother to his seven children but appeared to have none of her own.

Henry is shown in the 1871 census as still living with his mother Hannah at Barber Lane. Although he was only 10 years of age his occupation is shown as an Iron miner. He married an Elizabeth Shawcroft born c1870 at Clay Cross and later moved from the parish ending up in Grassmoor. His occupation changed from Iron miner to Coal Miner (Hewer).

Charles is shown in the 1881 census as a coal miner living at South Terrace, Cutthorpe with his mother Hannah. In 1863 he married his first wife, Hannah Needham, born c1864 at Brampton. The wedding took place at the church of St Peter and Paul, Old Brampton on the 7th January 1884. At this time he was shown as living at Oxton Rakes, their marriage being witnessed by John Needham and Mary Ann Needham.

Charles and Hannah had the following children:-

John born c1885 at Barlow who later become a Coal miner as shown in the 1901 census living at Barlow
Harry born c1897 at Hasland

Hannah died in 1897 a short time after Harry was born.

Charles then married a Harriet Meads born c1876 at Clay Cross. They married in 1900 and moved to Chapel Road, Hasland. They had a daughter, Annie, born c1901 at Hasland.

John Millington born c1865 at Cutthorpe was still living at South Terrace in Cutthorpe in the 1881 census, he was a Coal miner. In 1885 he married a Sarah Ann Hill born c1866 at North Wingfield. They moved to 35 Revill Street, Grassmoor and had the following thirteen children:-

Harry born c1887 at Grassmoor
Martha born c1890 at Grassmoor
Charles born c1893 at Grassmoor
Sarah Sally born c1896 at Grassmoor
Emma Alice born c1897 at Grassmoor
John Thomas born c1899 at Grassmoor
Amos born c1900 at Grassmoor
Job Levander born c1902 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)
Leslie Millington born c1903 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)
Lil Millington born c1904 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)
Ada Millington born c1906 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)
Arthur born c1907 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)
Elsie born c1908 at Derbyshire (Probably Grassmoor)

Ann Millington born c1868 at Brampton was living at Barber Lane in the 1871 census but in 1871 aged 12 was a domestic servant living at Far Lane, Barlow. In 1891 census she was a domestic servant living at 3 Charnwood Street, Babington in Derby.

Samuel Swindell Millington born c1871 at Brampton (believed Cutthorpe) was living at Cutthorpe in 1871 and 1881. In 1871 he was one month old and living at Barber Lane. In 1881 he was living at South Terrace, Cutthorpe. In 1889 he married Hannah Moore born c1871 at Bramley, Yorkshire. The marriage was registered at Chesterfield. They moved to Grassmoor and had the following children:-

Clara Kate born c1890 at Grassmoor
Ernest Swindell born c1894 at Grassmoor
Elsie M born 1897 at Grassmoor

In 1901 they were living at 19 Revill Street, Grassmoor.

Emma Millington born c1877 at Cutthorpe was shown as a domestic servant aged 14 living at New Street, Grassmoor.

Finally Mary Millington born c1829 at Great Barlow was still living with her parents, Ann and John, at Barlow in the 1861 census. I have not been able to trace her since that date.

My line of ancestry follows Alfred Millington born c1839 at Barlow, who was brought up by his Grandparents Ann and John. Alfred moved to Moorgate, Retford, Nottinghamshire between the 1861 and 1871 census. He was a miner and labourer. He married an Ann Allen born c1847 at Retford.

The direct family line then moves to South Yorkshire and eventually moves down to Cornwall.
